The 12-Point Digital Health Checklist for Your Clinic

  • Dec 1, 2025
  • 3 min read

Just as you guide your patients through routine checkups to maintain their long term health, it is essential to perform a regular "digital health checkup" on your practice. As of September 2025, the way patients find and choose their healthcare providers is fundamentally digital; your community is looking for you online.

A strong digital presence is no longer optional; it is a critical component of patient access and practice growth.

Use this simple 12-point checklist to perform a quick diagnostic on your clinic's online marketing. It will help you identify what you are doing well and where you can make improvements to better serve your patients.

Section 1: Your Digital Front Door (The Website)

Your website is often the first interaction a potential patient has with your practice. It must be professional, accessible, and helpful.

  • [ ] Is our website mobile-friendly?

    • Why it matters: More than half of all local searches happen on a smartphone. If your site is difficult to navigate on a small screen, patients will simply go elsewhere.

  • [ ] Are our phone number, address, and hours immediately visible?

    • Why it matters: This is core information. Forcing a patient to search for how to contact or find you creates a frustrating first impression.

  • [ ] Do we offer an online appointment request or booking feature?

    • Why it matters: Today's patients expect digital convenience. Online scheduling removes barriers and can increase new patient appointments significantly.

Section 2: Local Search Visibility (Can Patients Find You?)

When a patient searches for care, your practice must appear in the top results.

  • [ ] Have we claimed and fully optimized our Google Business Profile?

    • Why it matters: This free profile is the single most important factor for appearing in Google Maps and local search results. It must be complete with your correct hours, services, and recent photos.

  • [ ] Is our clinic's Name, Address, and Phone Number (NAP) consistent everywhere online?

    • Why it matters: Consistency across key directories like Google, Yelp, and Healthgrades builds trust with search engines, which improves your ranking. Inconsistencies create confusion.

Section 3: Online Reputation (Do Patients Trust You?)

What former and current patients say about you online is your most powerful marketing asset.

  • [ ] Do we have a steady stream of recent patient reviews (from the last 6 months)?

    • Why it matters: A profile with many recent, positive reviews is a powerful signal of a thriving, trusted practice. Old reviews carry less weight.

  • [ ] Do we respond to both positive and negative reviews in a timely manner?

    • Why it matters: Engaging with reviews shows you listen to and value patient feedback. A professional response to a negative review can even win the trust of prospective patients.

Section 4: Community Engagement (Are You a Trusted Voice?)

Demonstrating expertise and community involvement builds a loyal patient base.

  • [ ] Have we posted educational content on a social media channel in the last month?

    • Why it matters: An active social presence focused on health tips and community news, not sales, keeps your practice top of mind and builds a trusted brand.

  • [ ] Does our website contain a blog or patient resource center?

    • Why it matters: Answering common patient questions with helpful articles positions your clinic as an authority and significantly boosts your website's search engine performance.

Section 5: Compliance and Security (Are You Protecting Patients?)

In healthcare, digital marketing must be built on a foundation of security and privacy.

  • [ ] Is our website secure (using HTTPS)?

    • Why it matters: The padlock icon in a browser's address bar signals that any data submitted through your site is encrypted. This is crucial for protecting patient privacy and is a known Google ranking factor.

  • [ ] Is our staff fully trained on HIPAA rules for online communications?

    • Why it matters: A single HIPAA violation on social media or in a review response can have severe consequences. Everyone on your team must know the rules.

  • [ ] Are our patient email communications (like newsletters) opt-in and compliant?

    • Why it matters: All marketing communications must respect patient consent and privacy laws. Ensure patients have explicitly agreed to receive marketing emails from you.

Your Prescription for Digital Health

How did your practice score? If you checked every box, you have a robust and healthy digital presence. If you identified some unchecked boxes, you now have a clear "treatment plan" with actionable steps for improvement.

A strong online presence is not about mastering complex technology. It is about extending the same accessibility, trust, and high quality care you provide within your clinic to the digital spaces where your patients are looking for you.
